Happy Halloween!!
I love Halloween.
I've spent the last few days watching odd horror movies with various buddies. It has been a BLAST! There is nothing like watching strange horror flicks with close friends in October.
Tonight I plan to carve up our pumpkin, hand its guts over to Marlena to work her oven magic on, then settle down with roasted pumpkin seeds and a glowing Jack-o-lantern and try to fit in all the horror movies we didn't get to watch thus far (saving "The Nightmare before Christmas" and "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" for tomorrow when the kids come by for candy).
To get help everyone else get in the proper Halloween mood I found this short, little movie.
Directors Adam Green (Hatchet) and Ryan Schirin (Abominable) get together every year and make a no budget movie, starring only their friends, in just one night. This is the first one I've ever seen of those experiments, but I found it very entertaining.
It's five minutes long and worth a look, if you have the time to spare

Dean Haspiel's Immortal
I just found an awesome web comic.
It's called Immortal and stars Dean Haspiel's rough housin' Billy Dogma and Jane Legit.
I was not familiar with the characters until I read this strip, but I sure as heck am now. I'm hooked on these lovable lugs and the non-sequitur storytelling that comes with them.
The strip is made up of even-sized, large, single panel frames of really great art depicting sex, beatings and then more sex.... and then maybe some more beatings.
It's highly enjoyable, but may not be for everyone, due to it's odd and unflinching content. (There are close-ups of post coital nudie bits, but it's part of the story...seriously!) if that sounds like your cup of tea, check it out. IT'S FREE!
Dean Haspiel's IMMORTAL
I found it on Act-i-vate Comics bulletin on myspace...
Who knew myspace was actually good for somethin'?

Heroes
Is anyone else watching this tv show?
It's really good!
I think it's the best mainstream thing to happen to comic books since Kevin Smith started mentioning funny books in his flicks. If Mallrats, Chasing Amy and the others made comics cool, Heroes makes them legitimate entertainment for the masses.
The thing I truly love about it is they don't thumb their noses at comics with pot shots or self deprecation. They actually treat them with respect and even support them! Comics are a huge part of the show and many of the illustrations used onscreen are created by comic legend Tim Sale. Also, as an added bonus, you can go online and read online comics that fill in gaps between the shows. Sometimes they are even illustrated by big name guys like Michael Turner.
Heroes On-line comic
I know comics are all over the place now in movies and video games and are becoming more mainstream, but what makes this show different is it's not based on a comic. This means there is no defeated fan base when their favorite hero's cape is two shades too orange. The writers don't have to play to any one's preconceived notion of who these characters are or should be. This gives the characters the freedom to breathe and grow and that makes them real.
Jeph Loeb is the Executive Producer on the show, and I don't know if he is the only one deserving of praise, but I thank him and anyone else associated with this show. It is truly a love song to the art form that is comic books.
Genius!

Ladytron and CSS
Marlena and I went to see Ladytron play in Dallas over the weekend. It was FANTASTIC!!!
CSS (Cansei De Ser Sexy or "tired of being sexy" in English) opened up for them, I had seen one of their videos on YouTube and enjoyed it, but was not prepared for the rockin' performance they had stored up for the show. They reminded me a little bit of an 80's band in their fashion and electro-based music, but the thing that really sold them for me was their devil may care attitude. They were just running around, playing their songs, acting goofy and having a good time. They put on a really great show and I would recommend them highly. I don't know if this was just our show, but the lead singer was constantly pulling down her pants to show off her purple panties. It was very odd, but very funny.
Ladytron came out and did an amazing set. They are from London and this was their first show in Texas EVER. They seemed a little stand-offish at first, like they didn't know what kind of reaction they were going to get (People are sometime amazed when they come to Texas and discover that not everyone wears a cowboy hat and rides a horse to work), but with foreign relations being the way they are, and since President Bush is kinda from Texas(He wasn't born here, but was our Governor), I always wonder how we are viewed by people from other countries. Not that Ladytron is a political band or anything, they just seemed a little worried. After a few songs they loosened up a lot and really enjoyed themselves. We had a wonderful time.
If you are not familiar with either band and enjoy female vocal lead Electro-type music check them out. It's good stuff.

Updates...
Sorry, I'm so slow on the updates. I'm trying to post more often. I'm just crazy lazy/busy. :)
Marlena and I are working on our (almost annual)redesign of the Blue Sky Comics homepage. I think it's going to be really cool. We are going to create a small mini site for each one of our projects and I'm going to upload the Werewolf comic I did on 24 hour comic day a few years ago and the Cyclonaut comic I did MANY moons ago for free reading.
After much production work, I finally put pencil and pen to paper and am in the middle of the first page of my current book "Knucklejelly".
I'm pretty happy with it. It's one of the few times what I had in my head is actually working on paper. :)

Knucklejelly
I put up a new piece of art in my gallery.
It is the first image from the new comic I am working on.
The book is called "Knucklejelly" and I'll be posting about it a lot more in the near future.
I am writing, drawing and sharing coloring chores with the lovely Marlena.
I'm really excited about it.
